Abstract

The paper addresses the problem of improving the safety at sea through maritime education and training. It puts forward some proposals focused on four types of improvements to the STCW Convention and Code – one proposal for one type; namely: wording, harmonization with other IMO instruments, additional training emanating from existing regulations in other IMO instruments, additional training that may be foreseen with regard to current discussions at IMO.
